  1. First, although information seems hard to come by Nikon seems to have put a stop to D700 Body sales. I received mine on July 30th, perhaps just before sales were stopped. I have not contacted Amazon directly in regards to the D700 just yet but will. So I will write about what I know about this camera after just a few short days of using it.

I need to get off my chest about the way Amazon packaged a $3,000.00 camera. They just put it in a box slightly larger than the Nikon packaging and shipped it off. It seems unreasonable not to give it a layer of protection. The Nikon box had two major dings that caused concern, but the camera seems to be fine.

Reports of bugs and cameras not ready for release notwithstanding. I have not had any issues that would cause concern with the D700 so lets just get to the good stuff.

I find this camera to be a digital dream come true. The imaging is fantastic as one would expect from a state of the art Nikon imager. I find the controls to be intuitive and of the quality expected from Nikon. Adjustments are fast and easily executed without removing focus from the subject you are capturing. Custom profiles were something I was looking forward too and Nikon deliveries on the ability to control imaging with subtle and far reaching adjustments. I have a full complement of both manual and auto focus lenses, all work flawlessly with this camera.

The D700 is a winner on every front, except perhaps a smooth product launch. My only hope is their customer service matches their level of engineering.

  2. After many years, I am back to Nikon. Loved the SP, the FTn and the FE2. After that, I switched to Olympus OM-4Ts, to use with their spectacular 24 shift lens. I’m now using the Nikon 24 PC-e lens which is better than the Olympus, but only by a hair. (BTW, the Nikkor 24-120 lens that came with this camera is not bad. It drops off in the extreme corners but otherwise, its darned good and would probably be spectacular on a smaller sensor camera).

I really like the D700 and while its a relatively low megapixel camera (for “full frame”) it really shows that a bigger sensor is what makes the difference.

My only gripe is the weight. It starts out half a pound heavier than a Canon 5D. That’s OK, but add in a few of Nikon’s better lenses and its heavier than my Pentax 67 outfit. But I guess if you’re willing to pay the freight, you have to be willing to haul it, too. My personal opinion is that this tonnage takes some of the joy out of photography but I guess I’m in the minority, as usual.

  3. The title says it all – fantastic camera, awful lens. I give the D700 5 stars with no reservations, but the 24-120 lens is a shame for Nikon and should have never even be allowed into production. The lens is designed to be unsharp and have significant distortions and no amount of stopping down can improve the situation. The only positive thing I can say about it is that the tonal reproduction is great,

I returned this combo and bought D700 body only.

  5. The REVIEW? by Felix Gumby “Quirrell” was written, according to him, after one day with the camera. I sold my D2Xs on E-bay and bought a D700. It is by far the best camera I have owned. As to how it compares to the D3, yes the D3 has a couple of features the D700 does not, but it has the same sensor and that’s what counts. The only negative to the D700 is if you use DX crop mode forget it. Composing a picture in a sports event will trip you up. The masking function on the D3 works, the square box on the D700 does not. I am waiting on a 21MP Nikon with low light as good as the D700/D3, but the D3X is not it. As in indoor sports photographer, who does really low light the D700/D3 does it. Either one works for me. The D700 has some added functions and is newer technology. The Active-D lighting and sensor cleaning to name two. Felix’s review is unfair and inaccurate. One day with a camera is a bias review. I did not like the button changes to the D700 from the D2Xs, but I am very happy with the missing noise.

No one should give any attention to Felix Gumby “Quirrell”.

If anyone at Nikon reads this review just a quick idea. I am thinking of buying the Canon 5D MKII – it has the specs, except the slow frame rate, the D3X should of had. The D3X should have been no more than $5,500.00 on intro. I am now waiting for the D4/D400/D800?. The Canon 5d MKII is my next camera, will need an adapter for all my glass, including my old Canon glass too. Anybody know if Canon is changing the mount again?
